Why does Windows 10 identify my network as "Network 4" ...

Main Post: Why does Windows 10 identify my network as "Network 4" ...

Forum: answers.microsoft.com

My Ethernet keeps switching to "Network 4" from its given network name and gets super slow

Main Post:

I just signed up for Verizon's 5G home internet service and it started out great. The wifi has good download speeds in the 1 GBps range and in general, the wireless if fine. My issue is that my PC is connected via an ethernet port and occasionally switches from the network name (we'll call it "Steve") I give it to "Network 4". Now, the only reason I notice this is when I'm gaming.

When I'm gaming, when it shows "Steve" it works totally fine with fairly decent ping in the 50ms range. It will then randomly switch to "Network 4". I still have access to the internet but speeds are greatly reduced and the ping is atrocious, getting into 200+ms.

It's not a game server issue, as this is with multiple different games. Please help, I'm just a gamer that wants to play with his bros.

5GHz interfering with 2.4 GHz network

Main Post:

Hey guys I recently updated my router to an Asus RT-AX86U Pro and it’s been great other than both networks interfering with each other. I have to keep the 5Ghz network off because I have all my Ring devices connected to the 2.4 GHz network and anytime I have the 5 GHz network on it interferes with them and they often lose connection and drain the batteries like crazy. Is there a certain setting I can use so they don’t interfere with each other or if I need to change the network name? I am good with electronics but haven’t messed around with network settings that much. Much appreciated!

Top Comment:

Change the network name so your 2.4 and 5 ahve different names

5 is faster, but doesn't go through things like walls as well as 2.4. Meaning for 5 it has to transmit at a higher power to get through the walls to get to the router

Another option would be to make a second networks with only 2.4 and a diffent name.

I'm in an apartment so just have separate networks. Since the 5 can reach everywhere easily. Phones and laptops are on 5. Stuff that doesn't need a lot of bandwidth is on 2.4

SimCity 4- Network Addon Mod 49 has been released

Main Post: SimCity 4- Network Addon Mod 49 has been released

Top Comment: If you have no idea what this means like me: The NAM is a comprehensive transportation mod, adding the equivalent of multiple expansion packs worth of new transportation content to the game. With 0 context or knowledge, I thought this was adding multiplayer to sim city 4 or something haha.

v7.1.4 Wired Network NAT works, but Bridged Mode cannot

Main Post:

VirtualBox: 7.1.4
Host: Ubuntu 24.04.1 with Secure Boot
Guests: Ubuntu 24.04.1 Server
VirtualBox Extension Pack and VirtualBox Guest Additions installed: Yes, 7.1.4

I have Ub 24.04Server set up and running. (kenel modules have been registered)

NAT works and I can connect to the Internet to update the VM,

Switching to Bridged Mode, I cannot start networking. I have tried
- temporary static address on same network 192.168.0.xx/24 as the Host
- netplan static ip addressing
- netplan dhcp addressing (with my network's DHCP server)

Using "ip a", this is the status output
enp0s3: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_code state DOWN group default
link/etther 00:00:27:40,,,,

Dow anyone have a clue to what is happening?

Thanks

can’t connect to playstation network

Main Post:

My ps5 says im logged into playstation network, and i have internet connection. But when i try to play online games it says playstation network connection “failed”. I’ve tried using different internets, a lan cable, i rebooted my router, i updated my router, i updated my playstation. Nothing i do fixes this problem. When i test my internet connection on the playstation it says I’m connected and everything is ready to go, but when i try to play with friends and send them invites my playstation network connection “fails” again. I have playstation plus, and my internet works on other devices. Playstation network status says it’s all up, but one of my buddy’s who lives close to me is having the same problem. I don’t know what to do, i did everything ps support told me. I tried to get in contact with and actual person at playstation but to no avail.

Top Comment: Do you have AT&T? I had the same issue but I set my primary dns to 8.8.4.4 and my secondary dns to 8.8.8.8 and it started working again

Four WIFI Networks per AP limitation question

Main Post:

Current Setup:

Networks (VLANs);

  1. Main (home pcs, laptops)
  2. IoT (iot devices)
  3. Security (cameras)
  4. Guest (guest)
  5. Work (work computer, work laptop. both hardwired at this time)

Wifi Networks (SSID) - and network assignments;

  1. net-main - Main vlan
  2. net-iot - IoT vlan
  3. net-sec - Security vlan
  4. net-guest - Guest vlan

APs;

  1. Upstairs (nanoHD)
  2. Downstairs (U6 Pro)
  3. Bedroom (nanoHD)
  4. Front Foyer (U6 Extender)

So, yes I have an extender AP to push the downstairs wifi out to the garage and front of the house. So I need to have mesh turned on.

All networks are assigned to all APs (as I have devices in al the vlans connecting all over the house). So that's 4 wifi networks on each AP. [I can't limit which Wifi networks run on which APs, as I need all to run on all APs).

I want to add another Wifi network to the APs - for Work (assign to the Work VLAN) so I can use my work laptop anywhere in the house via wifi.

But, alas, I am running into the '4 Wifi networks per AP' limitation when running mesh. The error returned when trying to add another WIFI network is;

"You cannot have more than 4 wifi networks in the default AP group while wireless meshing is enabled".

So I am looking for any advice on how to keep all my devices separated (via VLANs) on the wifi networks and have more functionality by being able to add another wifi network to my APs.

Thanks.

Top Comment: Either scale down your uses and just use a different ssid you have already, remove the WiFi extender, or wait until the ppsk feature comes out completely so you can have 1 ssid with authentication putting you into a vlan of your choice.
